Euro 2016 was a spectacular tournament for fans, stadiums were packed and I’ve never quite heard so much noise before in a European Championship tournament. This is testament to the 10 stadiums used at the championships and in particular the Stade de France. The football struggled at times to live up to expectation but there was certainly no shortage of drama. Highlights such as England’s humiliating exist to Iceland in the last 16 and Wales rescuing British pride with a spectacular run to the semi-finals made this a tournament to remember.
France, hosting for a third time, grew well into the tournament and from the knock out stages on-wards were the stand out team making it to the final with an impressive win over Germany in the semis. Portugal, their final opponents, were a complete contrast, finishing third in what was called the easiest group and scraping through with just three draws. Portugal did improve in the knockout stages showing a dogged determinism that allowed them to grind through the games, in fact their only win in normal time during the entire tournament was the 2-0 semi-final victory over Wales. The final of the tournament was possibly the worst yet and the first to require extra time, the game was dour even up until Christiano Ronaldo was taken off injured and certainly did not improve afterwards. Taking the game to extra time a break from Portugal led to an impressive turn and strike from distance by substitute Éder who won the game for the Portugese, taking the trophy for the first time.
