England’s Wembley Stadium played host to the 2024 Champions League final, the third New Wembley time it has hosted Europe’s premier competition (2011, 2013 & 2024) and the eighth time in total hosting a European Cup final if you include old Wembley (1963, 1968, 1971, 1978 & 1992).
The last time Wembley hosted in 2013 Dortmund made their first CL final and were beaten by national rivals Bayern Munich. They must have been hoping that it would be second time lucky but unfortunately for them they had to beat Read Madrid to do that. Dortmund were far better than they were in 2013 and absolutely dominated the first half and would have been kicking themselves to not be leading, really they should have been two or three goals ahead such was the gulf between them and a floundering Madrid.
Real managed to keep it level through a bit of luck and some great saves from Thibaut Courtois and then they did what they always do. With 15 minutes to go Carvajal headed in from a rare corner and with Dortmund pushing for an equaliser Vinícius made it 2-0 and put the game to bed. Real Madrid won their 15th European Cup and Dortmund remain without one. Few will remember the circumstances in years to come, only that Real won it yet again. Dortmund on the other hand may never get a better chance with a better team. If they couldn’t beat Madrid this time will would they ever?
