Victoria Road: Dagenham & Redbridge
Victoria Road is currently known as the Chigwell Construction Stadium because of sponsorship. It has hosted football since 1917 when factory workers from Sterling Works used to play games on it. It didn’t become a fully enclosed stadium until 1955 when Dagenham FC moved into it.
Two years after Dagenham started calling the ground their home it hosted its first floodlit football match when Woodford turned up to play an FA Youth Cup game. The stadium’s highest attendance was also at an FA Cup game, this time between Dagenham and Reading in 1967 when 7200 managed to get inside.

- Pie: £2.5
- Cup of tea: £1.2
Hospitality
As with most clubs, there are opportunities to sponsor the match or the match ball and enjoy hospitality this way. There are also executive boxes for hire with fully stocked mini bars and waitress service; but if you’d prefer standard match day hospitality then you’ll enjoy a three-course meal in the Dave Andrews Suite, half-time refreshments, and a seat in the Sponsors’ Box. To be fair, for a small club they do a good job with their hospitality offering.
Private Hire
There are two halls and an upstairs bar for hire at Victoria Road.
Stadium Tours & Museum
There is no tour or museum at the stadium, but to be fair there wouldn’t be much to see if they did run one, so we can see why they don’t.
About Dagenham & Redbridge
The club as it currently exists was formed in 1992 when Dagenham FC merged with Redbridge Forest. Dagenham dates back to 1949 and Redbridge Forest to 1979 and the current club has ties to both. These ties are demonstrated well in the club’s colours, as the Red and Blue kit takes something from each of the former club’s kits. The club heritage can actually be traced back to 1881, given that Redbridge Forest was a combination of Ilford, Leytonstone and Walthamstow Avenue amateur clubs.
Since 1992 Dagenham & Redbridge have enjoyed a love hate relationship with the Football League; insomuch as they love being in it and hate the constant yo-yoing out of it that seems to be the way the club is set up to work. The club was the subject of a failed match-fixing plot in 2013, resulting in the conviction of two players and a business man. None of the people involved had anything to do with D&R, however.
Victoria Road History
Between the arrival of Dagenham at the ground in 1955 and the subsequent arrival of Redbridge Forest in 1990, the stadium was well maintained but had seen very few cosmetic changes. It was only after 1990 that things started to improve as they paid for the installation of a new stand. Improvements continued over the following years, especially after Redbridge Forest and Dagenham merged forces.
As well as hosting Dagenham & Redbridge games, the stadium has also been used to host the England Women’s match against Sweden as well as UEFA Youth International games. The Premier League team West Ham United, who are also based in London, have used the stadium to host some of their youth games in the ground over the years, too.
Future Developments
At the time of writing there are no major developments planned for Victoria Road, and unless they get themselves promoted this is unlikely to change.
