They’re arguably one of the biggest football clubs in England, with a rich history – especially in the Premier League era, while they have their fair share of icons, such as local legend, Alan Shearer who have gone down in history in English football. Newcastle United is a club over the last couple of years, though, that has, in one fell swoop become the richest in the world.
With the backing of the Saudi state they have moved to another level, once again featuring in Europe’s most elite continental club competition and elevating themselves considerably, with the calibre of players they have been able to sign. This season’s Premier League odds suggest they will be battling for European spot come the end of the season.
As such, the club’s increase in quality makes their even more interesting at the start of every season since they were taken over and they will certainly be one to watch over the next couple of campaigns, especially if the exciting new plans for a stadium redevelopment comes to fruition.
What Are The Details Of The New Stadium Proposal?
Currently, the Magpies’ stadium, St James’ Park, or affectionately nicknamed among die-hard fans, ‘Chateau of Shearer’ has a capacity of 52,000 though the new proposal for redevelopment aims to take this to between 65,000 and 70,000 which would make it one of the biggest in the league.
The proposal itself, as it has been outlined, would see a complete rebuild of the ground “as part of a major redevelopment of the surrounding area that would bring far more than just a new stadium”, according to club chiefs. Despite this, a new location is still under consideration, but unlikely.

As such, it means that the rebuild could put the stadium on par with other new-builds, such as the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which has effectively set a precedent for football stadium technology. Because of this, it is predicted that the estimated cost could be in the region of £1 billion – illustrating that this is effectively the ‘standard’ for this level of advancement.
Undoubtedly and, as you might expect given the level of ambition already demonstrated by the new owners, this is likely to be a stunning stadium – certainly, if not the best in northern England and could easily eclipse the Etihad Stadium where Manchester City (the Saudi’s sister club) play.
State of the art technology is likely to be a given, which could well revolutionise operations at the football club as a whole and lead to a more streamlined, much increased efficiency allowing for possibly greater revenue generating potential.
Possible Commercial Implications
In terms of what a new stadium could lead to, already as we have seen with others such as the Etihad Stadium, Emirates Stadium and most recently, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, it could well mean significantly better commercial prospects.
Although the owners effectively have, more or less, a bottomless pit of cash, there will still be a focus on profit and sustainability long term and, as a result, putting the foundations in place in order to try and make this possible is key to try and achieve this.
Effectively, the possibilities are endless. The fact that there will likely be new technology could help lead to securing better commercial sponsorships, especially when you factor in that we could see revolutionary digital screens that could essentially provide more prominent advertising opportunities, allowing the club to negotiate higher rates.
Due to the likelihood of significantly advanced facilities, it could also allow the club to increase ticket prices, in addition to offering lucrative corporate hospitality packages as another source of income. Furthermore, it may also mean that there are other facilities onsite that help to contribute towards a greater matchday experience for fans, such as salubrious restaurants for pre and post match entertainment as well.
How The Community Is Likely To Benefit
What this new project means – should it get the go-ahead, is that it will likely generate much-needed income for the area – especially in terms of jobs, such as for the construction work on the stadium and planned facilities in the immediate vicinity. In addition to this, the extra jobs that it will provide once completed, again, could be a vital boost to the local economy and, perhaps help to increase the standard of living.
An increase in capacity also means, added footfall, so regenerating the local area does make sense – perhaps a shopping centre, leisure facility (gym) and the like, could well further increase revenue-generating potential, allowing whole families to visit the local area. Perhaps, out of a family of four – two might go to the match and two might enjoy the facilities in the immediate area, which again signals how much this could provide added value.
Ultimately, there is no reason why this proposed redevelopment wouldn’t take the club to the next level and it could well lay the foundations for continued and sustained success at Newcastle United, both on the pitch and commercially.
